Valentine's crafts are my favourite, because Valentine's means hearts. I still like to let her indulge, in the hope that she may have some artistic gene hidden away in there somewhere. Pretty soon Ruby is going to find me out and realise that my talents do not extend beyond dodgy looking stick men. Well, I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but I have no artistic ability whatsoever. One of 10 sketchbook sheets I'm working on for FOR Sweden, a Horticultural Society currently focussing on informing people about Scandinavian invasive species, like this one. I have no sense of direction whatsoever, alas, but ask me where any number of different species of wild flowers and garden escapes can be found growing in Hay on Wye, and I'll probably be able to help. This is a sketchbook study sheet of the Snowberry Symphoricarpus albus, and I've sourced some growing in a hedge not 2 minutes walk from the studio. And this is always step one, plotting in tonal shapes relating to the leaf veins.įurther details and washes follow, but there's a bit of me that likes the way this initial network looks. Most times I illustrate botanical subjects my approach is the same.įirst I concentrate on leaves. Thanks to for the specimens that I illustrated for this project. ![]() Want to know more? Sign up, and join me and Butterfly Conservation in January: It's also important for agriculture and farming, and helps soil health. I'll be there on zoom on January 11th to answer questions that might come up as we illustrate together.īird's-foot trefoil is really important for insects, and is the food plant for loads of butterflies, including the Dingy skipper, a species butterfly conservation are working to preserve. You'll also get relevant handouts and a detailed equipment list. I discuss what I'm doing at each stage of the process, and show you what's involved in painting this vital and common little wildflower. I've filmed myself completing a botanical illustration of the Bird's-foot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus. I'm running a free online workshop with on January 11th 2023. #sketchbook #sketch #sketchbookstudy #botanicalart #botanicalillustration #flowerart #flowerillustration #sciart #botany #buddleja #butterflybush #naturalhistoryillustration #naturalscienceillustration. Hey ho.Īnyway, irrelevant of their status as invasive or native species, I'm loving working in this set of illustrations. Less Victorian botanists, gardeners escapes, and international travel would have, in retrospect, been wise. Perhaps I'm just looking for a tone that reflects humans involvement and responsibility for the whole mess. I remain uncomfortable with the words and tone used to describe these incredibly successful plants and animals, but equally accept the damage they do yo native habitats. I'm surprised by how much of my wirk involves illustrating invasive species of plants and animals. ![]() Then they upload them to their website where people can learn about plants which are outcompeting native species. They commission me to do these sketch sheets of invasive plants. It's one of a series of 10 I'm working on for FOR Sweden. ![]() This sheet has details of the plant, individual flowers and leaves, the stem, buds, flower morphs and Cross sections. I love Buddleja, the snell, the way it attracts butterflies, its insanely prolific growth, and even the way it's spelled! I just caught it before the flowers went over for the year, and even found the dark purple, Mauve and white forms in bloom. This is the completed sketchbook study of the Buddleja or Butterfly Bush.
